An athletic waiver is a legal agreement between a sports organization, such as a league, gym, or facility, and a participant. By signing the waiver, the adult participant, or, if they are minors, their parent/guardian, acknowledges the risks of the sport and agrees not to hold the organization liable for injuries or other incidents.

Generally, your facility should require participants to sign waivers before engaging in any activity with a physical component.

Because they are physical in nature, sports inherently involve a higher risk of injury than other activities. Without a signed waiver, your facility and coaches are vulnerable to expensive personal injury lawsuits for accidents that are simply part of the game. Many liability insurance providers also require valid waivers for all athletes as a condition of coverage.

Sports waivers must be thorough and specific to be effective. Typically, they include the following key sections and components:

• Parties Involved: Clearly identify who is being protected and who is signing the waiver.
• Activity Description: Define the specific sport or activity, clarifying the scope of the waiver.
• Participant Data Fields: Use these sections to collect essential personal information, such as the participant's full name, date of birth, address, and emergency contact details.
• Assumption of Risk Clause: Include a detailed list of specific dangers inherent to the sport, such as collisions, equipment failure, or surface conditions.
• Release of Liability: This is the core legal statement where the signer voluntarily agrees not to sue the organization for injuries resulting from ordinary negligence.
• Parental Consent (for Minors): For youth sports, add a mandatory section where a parent or legal guardian must grant permission and sign on behalf of the minor.
